Scrappage Scheme

The Car Scrappage Scheme

Older cars can pose a threat to the environment. It is best for them to be scrapped and replaced by newer, more efficient vehicles. That is why the government have decided to run the car scrappage scheme. When you scrap an eligible car and buy a new one you could get £2,000 off the OTR price. Although the idea sounds great, at Scrap Car Oxford we believe their are some problems with the scheme. For example, it dictates which new cars you can have in exchange for your old scrap car. Also, the car you are scrapping has to meet the strict guidelines the government has set. We have listed below the government’s requirements.

The old, scrap car must:

  • Have a UK address on the registration certificate (also known as V5C)
  • Be a small van or car weighing no more than 3,500 kg
  • Have an in date (or within 14 days of expiry) tax disc when you order your new vehicle
  • Be registered in the United Kingdom on or before the 31st August 1999
  • Have a current MOT test certificate before date of order for the new vehicle (or within 14 days of expiry at the time of order)
  • Still be insured when you purchase the new vehicle
  • Have been registered to you continuously for at least a year
  • Be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or Driver and Vehicle Agency in your name

Of course, few cars meet these strict requirements. Unfortunately, we’ve seen this lead to a lot of disappointed people in Oxford who were hoping to profit from scrapping their car.
